Fashionable Vintage 2 Piece Prom Dresses

It may surprise some to know that two piece formal wear for proms had become the in thing during the late 1960’s. It was an era known for breaking traditions. Designers today cater to the vintage 60’s prom fashions for the fashion aficionado who delights in following fads. The two-piece taffeta dress set with long sleeves and a bodice with portrait neckline with front buttons and self-tie sash at waist having full A-line skirt with sweep train – this was the classic vintage two piece prom dress.

By the 1968’s, a new sophistication had begun to emerge in styles. Apart from the formal party dress to be worn as a two piece ensemble, designs were also influenced by the Spanish styles like the bolero jackets and the gaucho pants. Also wearing pants out to the prom became acceptable. A popular dress for the prom was a velvet bolero with golden embroidery over a creamy crepe skirt with billowing sleeves and wide collars. The pants had chain cummerbunds.
The fashion was also influenced by the baby doll look that was prevalent in those days. Gowns with dramatic lantern sleeves made of rayon velvet were in vogue in the late 60’s. Prom dresses were pretty and often frilly frocks. A short-lived fad was the harem look that had a ballooning skirt. Hollywood was the main driver of prom fashion designs and fantasy looks abounded.

Sophisticated European styling was also much in demand. Two-tone rayon chiffon fabrics were popular. The styling included added flattery, cape sleeves and satin waistbands. Lace made from Acetate and Nylon used on a yarn dyed acetate dress with a lining of bodice was the classic Prom Dress.
